If you're planning to study, work, or migrate to Australia, you’ve probably seen two options when booking your test:
IELTS Academic - IELTS General Training
And honestly… it’s confusing.
Students message us all the time asking,“Which one should I take?”“Is Academic harder?” “Can I use General for university?”
Let’s clear this up properly.

First: What’s the Real Difference?
Both tests check the same four skills:
Listening
Reading
Writing
Speaking
The Listening and Speaking sections are exactly the same in both versions.
The difference is in Reading and Writing Task 1.
IELTS Academic
This is for people who want to:
Apply to university in Australia (UWA, Curtin, ECU, etc.)
Register with a professional body (nursing, engineering, teaching)
Study at a higher education level
Reading:More academic texts. Articles, research-style writing, complex vocabulary.
Writing Task 1:You describe a graph, chart, process, or diagram.
If you're going to university, you will almost always need Academic.
IELTS General Training
This is usually for people who want to:
Apply for permanent residency (PR)
Work or migrate to Australia
Apply for some vocational courses
Reading:More everyday materials — advertisements, workplace texts, notices.
Writing Task 1:You write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal).
Most migration applicants take General, but always check your specific visa requirements first.
So… Is One Easier?
Short answer? Not really.
It depends on you.
If you're comfortable reading academic texts and describing data → Academic might suit you.
If you're stronger in practical English and writing letters → General may feel more natural.
But neither test is “easy.”Both require strategy, practice, and understanding how examiners mark your work.
Can You Use Academic for Migration?
In many cases, yes.
Some visa categories accept Academic instead of General. But this depends on your visa subclass, so always confirm before booking.
If you're planning to both study and migrate in the future, Academic can sometimes give you more flexibility.
Before You Book Your Test
Please don’t guess.
We’ve seen students book the wrong test and lose time and money.
Before you register:
Check your university requirements
Check your visa subclass requirements
Confirm the minimum band score you need
If you're unsure, ask. A quick consultation can save you weeks of stress.
